ANALYSIS OF THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT ACCIDENT DATA ON CHILDREN IN CARS AND A COMPARISON WITH SURVEYS OF THE USE OF CHILD RESTRAINTS (1983)

Information collected on casualties in motor vehicle accidents by the Ministry of Transport of New Zealand is coded and stored on computer, and, after checking, a statistical statement (blue book) is produced. The blue book provides only elementary information on children injured in motor vehicle accidents. This papaer examines the accident data on children as passengers in cars in greater detail, and makes comparisons with the Ministry's surveys of children in cars. The purpose of this comparison is to ascertain whether the accident data support the recommendations to use restraint systems where these are available and to move unrestrained children from the front to the rear seat.
