SPRAYED STEEL FIBRE CONCRETE: PART 2
The research has established typical strength and toughness properties of sprayed fibre concrete and related these to the in situ fibre content. The effect of in situ fibre content is of particular importance but has been consistently overlooked in the past when the fibre concrete strength was simply quoted at its dry mix fibre content. Spraying fibre concrete produces an anisotropic material with the fibres lying predominantly parallel to the sprayed surface. Whilst providing a more efficient reinforcing mechanism, the two-dimensional fibre orientation requires careful consideration in the selection of appropriate test methods. A possible approach to quality control is to use test panels sprayed at the start of a project to establish the relationship between point-load index and flexural strength. The point-load core test can then be used during construction for routine quality control. The cored samples will also allow visual inspection of the in situ material and can be used to determine fibre content. For abstract of part I on production and placing of sprayed steel fibre concrete see TRIS 396955. (TRRL)
