CONCRETE DOLOS UNITS PROTECT NEW NORTH WALES COAST ROAD

The new route of the A55 North Wales coast road includes a 1.6 km length on an embankment built out over the existing foreshore. The embankment is protected from 5 M high inshore waves by precast unreinforced dolos units. A dolos unit is in a twisted h-shape. It has a high void to solid ratio, necessary for dissipating wave energy and neighbouring units interlock with each other, giving added stability to the armour layer. The units were mass produced in a casting yard on site. As a result of model tests a 5-tonne unit was adopted, placed at a slope of 1 in 2. The placing specification called for an overall density of 45 dolos units per sq m. They were placed in two layers with 55 percent in the bottom layer. At least 50 percent of the units were placed with their vertical legs to seaward to give increased stability. (TRRL)
