AN ANCHORED FILL HARBOUR WALL USING SYNTHETIC FABRICS
Development at the Port of St Helier, Jersey, required a new harbour wall to retain the fill and to form a quay. The original proposals for a high rubble bank or a precast concrete block wall were superseded by the scheme to build a Websol frictionally anchored soil wall 8 m high from low tide level on top of a relatively small rubble bank. The paper describes the design and construction of the Websol wall with particular reference to the settlement of the rubble bank during construction and to the instrumentation of a typical section of the wall. It also considers the internal stability of the wall in the light of the readings taken and of conventional analytical procedures for such structures. An alternative explanation of the observed pattern of tensions is offered for consideration. (TRRL)
