BITUMEN IN ASFALT

According to several asphalt paving organisations the quality of bitumen has deteriorated in recent years and has caused failures in flexible pavements. Asphalt quality is related to the quality of bitumen. The author prefers the term "property" to "quality" and explains how and to what extent properties such as viscosity, stiffness modulus, softening point and penetration are essential to the quality of asphalt. He emphasizes the fact that the properties are determined by the total of all bitumen components and not by certain amounts of certain components, and the fact that bitumen properties ought to be selected to give the required asphalt properties. It is stated that bitumen crudes are still selected, used and manufactured in the same way as they were thirty years ago. (TRRL)
