EFFECT OF SILICONE IMPREGNATION ON CONCRETE BRIDGE SURFACINGS

Water absorption of concrete was measured before and after silicone treatment of the concrete, according to Method 6 of BS 1881, Part 5. The tests were conducted on very porous, normal and very dense concrete. 3 different types of silicone were used: silicone resin, oligo-alkylalkoxysilane and monoalkylalkoxysilane. The results show a reduction in water absorption after silicone treatment of about 60 per cent. Repeating the treatment yields a further reduction of about 50 per cent. No difference in effect between the three silicone types is found. The relative reduction in water absorption seems to be equal for dense, normal, and porous concrete, although the effect might be a little smaller for vacuum-treated concrete. (TRRL)
