DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF A SINGLE DEGREE-OF-FREEDOM ELASTIC-PLASTIC SOFTENING STRUCTURE

A single degree of freedom model with an elastic-plastic- softening resistance function is analysed for its response to simple forms of dynamic load: suddenly applied constant, rectangular and impulse. Critical softening parameters are identified in terms of the severity and duration of the applied load, the plastic plateau length and the permissible range of softening. An example demonstrates the effect of the softening parameter on the maximum displacement, the time to this displacement, and the amplitude of the residual harmonic vibration. Energy equations are used to find the relationship between severity of applied load and the nature of the response: elastic, elastic-plastic, elastic- plastic-softening, or failure. Equivalent damping ratios are expressed in terms of the softening parameter, the severity of the load, and the plastic plateau length. (Author/TRRL)
