RECREATION TRAFFIC IN NATIONAL PARKS: BEYOND THE CAR
THE REPORT IS CONCERNED WITH THE IMPACT OF CARS ON NATIONAL PARKS IN GREAT BRITAIN AND THE THREAT POSED BY THE PROJECTED INCREASES IN CAR OWNERSHIP AND RECREATIONAL TRAFFIC. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT (1) AN EXPERIMENTAL PARK-WIDE RECREATIONAL TRANSPORT SERVICE BE SET UP ON ONE OR MORE NATIONAL PARKS, (2) REGULAR RECREATIONAL TRAINS RUNNING BETWEEN CITIES AND NATIONAL PARKS BE ESTABLISHED AT PEAK HOLIDAY PERIODS AND DURING SUMMER WEEKENDS, (3) ALL MOTORWAYS AND MAJOR ROAD IMPROVEMENTS IN NATIONAL PARKS BE ABANDONED, (4) A PRIZE BE OFFERED BY THE COUNTRYSIDE COMMISSION FOR THE BEST DESIGN OF PARK-AND-RIDE BUS FOR USE IN NATIONAL PARKS AND (5) THE COUNTRYSIDE COMMISSIONS RECOMMENDATION THAT COSTS INCURRED BY NATIONAL PARK PLANNING BOARDS SHOULD BE COVERED BY A GOVERNMENT GRANT BE IMPLEMENTED.
