OREGON'S TRI-MET LAUNCHES REPOWERING. CROWN-IKARUS BUSES GET NEW LIFE FROM DETROIT DIESEL 6-71TS
Tri-Met of Portland, OR, has repowered a Crown-Ikarus articulated bus with a Detroit Diesel Allison (DDA) diesel engine in replacement of the original Cummins engine, retaining the Allison transmission. Growing maintenance problems and costs encountered with the original engines and need to standardize power plans on all rolling stock led to the program. The DDA engine fitted the original under-floor compartment with a few alterations. Initial tests indicated some improved fuel economy and use of an electronic fuel injection system of future conversions should yield further improvement.
