DIGGABILITY OF SOILS. METHODS OF CALCULATION AND DRAFT FOR CLASSIFICATION OF SOILS ACCORDING TO DIGGABILITY

THE PURPOSE OF THIS SURVEY WAS TO DEVELOP A CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM FOR EXCAVATION WORKS. THE SYSTEM IS TO BE BASED ON THE STRUCTURE OF THE SOIL STRATA AND OF THE PROPERTIES OF THE SOIL. SOIL TYPES ARE GROUPED IN SUCH A WAY THAT ALL SOIL TYPES OFFERING LARGELY THE SAME AMOUNT OF RESISTANCE TO CUTTING FALL INTO THE SAME CATEGORY. THE REPORT DISCUSSES THEORIES ON HORIZONTAL CUTTING OF SOIL. FIELD TESTS WERE CONDUCTED IN BOFORS DURING THE SUMMER OF 1969. LABORATORY TESTS, INCLUDING SHEAR TESTS, TRIAXIAL TESTS AND COMPACTION TESTS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE THE PARAMETERS FOR THE DIFFERENT SOILS. THE TEST AREAS CONSISTED OF SAND, CLAY AND MORAINE. IN EACH TEST AREA TWELVE RUNS WERE CARRIED OUT USING A BULLDOZER EQUIPPED WITH INSTRUMENTS. BY MEASURING THE VOLUME EXCAVATED ON EACH RUN IT WAS POSSIBLE TO ESTABLISH A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE TOTAL CUTTING FORCE, AND THE CUTTING DEPTH AT THE SAME EXCAVATED VOLUME FOR THE DIFFERENT SOIL TYPES. IN THE CASE OF THE DIFFERENT SOILS USED IN THE FIELD TESTS, THE CUTTING FORCE WAS CALCULATED FOR DIFFERENT RELATIVE DENSITIES THAN THOSE PREVAILING DURING THE FIELD TESTS. THIS WAS BASED ON TESTS AND THEORETICAL OBSERVATIONS DERIVING MAINLY FROM REECE IN ENGLAND. A DRAFT FOR DIVISION OF THE SOIL TYPES SAND, CLAY AND MORAINE INTO DIGGABILITY CLASSES HAS BEEN PRODUCED ON THE BASIS OF THE CORRELATIONS ESTABLISHED IN THIS WAY. THE REPORT COMPARES THIS CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM WITH A FINNISH PROPOSAL PRESENTED IN 1971, DEALING WITH DIGGABILITY CLASSES FOR SOILS BASED ON DIGGING TESTS USING AN HYDRAULIC EXCAVATOR.
