PROPANE VEHICLE SYSTEM OFFERS BETTER RESULTS THE SECOND TIME AROUND

Coastliner, a Mississippi airport ground transportation service, has reduced fuel and maintenance costs by using propane and installing propane carburetion equipment. In addition to serving the New Orleans airport, Coastliner also provides charter and sightseeing services with a fleet of 14 Ford vans and 3 MCI 43-passenger buses. Vehicles average up to 120,000 miles per year. Most of the 11 converted vans have dual-fuel systems and can also operate on gasoline. It was necessary to develop a higher capacity vehicle fuel tank for the round-trip distances Coastliner operates. Fueling facilities and training for drivers and mechanics were provided by the propane supplier. Fuel costs have dropped while intervals for oil changes and engine tune-ups have been extended. It has been found that a user has to have high fuel requirements before a propane conversion program can be attractive.
