MAGLEV RAILWAY DEVELOPMENT FOR HIGHSPEED TRANSPORT
The development of magnetic levitation technology has made considerable strides during the last few years. Especially in the Federal Republic of Germany, the opening of the Emsland Transrapid Experimental Installation has demonstrated the greatly advanced standard of development of the maglev technology as an essential condition for the introduction of a track-bound contactless rapid transit system. In addition to the further development of the wheel-on-rail technology concentrated in Europe, for instance in France (TGV, Train a Grande Vitesse) and in Germany ICE Inter City highspeed experimental train), a contactless transport technology is being developed which will close the speed gap between rail and air transport. The example of the Emsland Transrapid Experimental Installation is used to describe the current level of development of the maglev technology. Further trails and planned applications are discussed in a survey of the future.
