BEEFING UP TRUSS BRIDGES
The first application of a new rehabilitation scheme for steel truss bridges was recently completed on a 110 year old bridge in Coldersport, Pennsylvania. The reinforcing system increased thee load-bearing capacity of thee bridge from 3 to 20 tones at one third the estimated cost of replacement. The underlying concept of the system, developed at Bucknell University, is that the combination of a reinforcing arch with an existing truss system can carry a significant extra load if it is well supported laterally. The system goes beyond conventional repair techniques. Rather than restoring the carrying capacity of the original structure, the arch adds enough strength to handle current traffic loads. The improvement, there, is entirely structural. Vertical clearance, deck width, waterwall opening and approach alignment remain the same.
