Decision support algorithm for intermodal transport networks: Urban aerial cableway systems

The authors propose a decision support algorithm to solve the service policy of urban cableway systems, which are used as a transport mode to address the First-Last Mile problem for intermodal urban public transport networks. The work develops a stochastic discrete-event model for computing the queuing performance of the public transport networks and evaluates the effects on the passenger waiting time over a commercial working day, considering different service policies: (i) previous policy; (ii) current policy; and (iii) proposed policy. The authors provide an embarking procedure for urban cableway lines to aid transport operators in managing queues on platforms during rush hours. Finally, a set of large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations was conducted using a real multimodal network of a large-size metropolitan city (3.8 million inhabitants) to evaluate the effectiveness of different service policies.
