THE NEW FIAT SAFETY CENTER FOR A NEW PHILOSOPHY IN COLLISION TESTS
In order to develop the technology (and automobiles) that will comply with present and future automotive safety and fuel economy regulations, Fiat has constructed a new vehicle testing Safety Center which provides for all types of dynamic tests (pendulums, dummy-torso catapults for impact against steering wheel, simulator dolly for seat and safety belt tests) and static tests (presses up to 80 tons and 5 m. stroke, door and roof penetration, seat and belt anchorage strength, locks, and hinges). Five outdoor tracks, 1370 feet long, and three indoor tracks, 400 feet long allow vehicle testing up to a maximum speed of 62 mph for commercial vehicles up to 20 tons, or of 87 mph for passenger cars. The vehicles are propelled by an underground trolley or supplemental dollies, with the speed tolerance kept to 0.25% by a central computer, programmed for each particular crash test. Crash test measurement signals from test vehicles and on-board dummies are transmitted to an analog and digital computer housed in a centralized Electronic Data Room via a 60-channel cable and 96-channel telemetry system. This Data Room is also equipped with a closed-circuit TV system with six remotely-controlled TV cameras positioned throughout the center, and videotaping equipment, to allow for slow motion observation of the tests. A 1000-car parking area adjacent to the outdoor tracks provides parking space for experimental vehicles to allow for re-examination after testing.
