PASSENGER CAR FUEL ECONOMY AND RELATIVE ENERGY CONSUMPTION
A method is presented for comparing the fuel economy of various automobiles and groups of automobiles, based on a comparison of the energy consumed over the two Federal driving cycles and a theoretical value. Environmental Protection Agency certification data for both average and best fuel economy show that, for a given model year, the certification data closely follow a line of constant relative energy consumption. Projections of possible upper limits of fuel economy likewise show agreement, but over a wider range. Further refinements in the methodology may be useful both when considering overall average fuel economy, and when comparing individual automobiles.
