ROAD DAMAGE INVENTORY BY THE IPR SYSTEM

INVENTERING AV VAEGSKADOR MED IPR:S SYSTEM

The report deals with a method for road damage inventory and an attempt to adapt it to Swedish conditions. The method was prepared at the Brazilian Road Research Laboratory, Instituto de Pesquisas Rodoviarias (IPR). The result of the inventory is a general damage index, SG, used for ascribing the object (road section or network) to either of five classes: (1) very good, (2) good, (3) acceptable, (4) poor, (5) very poor. The method was tested on a national highway in the North of Sweden. After a brief inspection three sections were selected for testing. The annual frost index average 104000 degree-hours. The adaption to Swedish conditions was made by filling in two records, one being the original Brazilian form containing 21 well-known deficiencies and the other identical but with the addition of deficiencies typical for Sweden, i.e. such as result from frost action andd sudded tyres. The IPR method is meant for comparison of networks or long road sections by means of e.g. mean SG. As a basis for decision on maintenance measures it would be better to use a classification system related to required treatment. In this format the method may be used on the object level. This approach has been tested successfully in the above-mentioned investigation. (Author/TRRL)
