A RE-ASSESSMENT OF RETAINING WALL FOUNDATION DESIGN
Using conventional design methods, independent checks are made on sliding, overturning, and bearing stability, with the base width of the wall being dictated by these conditions. By applying an integrated design approach, all three stability conditions can be interrelated. This approach indicates that the selection of unduly high angles of base friction as permitted by the current code of practice for earth retaining structures, can lead to unacceptably low factors of safety on bearing capacity when due account is taken of eccentricity and inclination.
