NATURAL TWINES AS MAIN REINFORCEMENTS IN CONCRETE BEAMS

The low modulus of elasticity and the organic nature of natural twines are the two main factors which make suspect their direct suitability as reinforcement of concrete matrices. On the other hand, their price levels, easy and wide spread availability are favourable factors calling for investigation to establish and assess, at least, their indirect suitability as reinforcement of concrete. In this paper the flexural performance of beam specimens under static, repeated and sustained loadings is established and the deficiencies identified. Attempts made to improve the performance by use of short fibres to supplement, or small proportions of mild steel to complement, the twines are reported and briefly diiscussed. (Author/TRRL)
