THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF HEAVY INDUSTRIAL PAVEMENTS
This paper presents the background to the British Ports Association (BPA) Industrial Pavement Design Manual. The paper shows the method of analysis used in the manual and gives the design criteria adopted. The range of pavements which can be designed are described and the material properties of these pavements are given. The way in which industrial pavement loading is assessed is described and the concepts of port area wheel load (PAWL) and load classification index (LCI) are defined. The design of overlays is explained and material conversion factors are tabulated for all commonly used UK pavement construction materials. Design examples are presented for both new paving and pavement strengthening. Conclusions are drawn regarding the advances in pavement design brought about by the development of the BPA pavement design method. (Author/TRRL)
