GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATIONS FOR MOUNT PLEASANT AIRFIELD, FALKLAND ISLANDS, USING THE FLOW THROUGH SAMPLER

The requirement for the preconstruction investigations at Mount Pleasant Airfield in the Falkland Islands was rapidly to provide data for foundation designs on variable residual soils and weathered rocks throughout an extensive site using small, portable equipment. The solution adopted was to use the Marlow Flow Through Probe as a continuous dynamic penetration tool, and to deploy a team to prove, develop, operate and interpret the technique during nine weeks in the field. The equipment, fieldwork and communications are described, and the paper concludes that the brief has stimulated techniques which may in future be applied to geologically simple sites both at home, and more particularly overseas.
