COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PAVEMENT GRANULAR BASES IN THE LEIRIA EXPERIMENTAL STRETCH (1ST REPORT)

ESTUDA COMPARATIVO DE BASES GRANULARES DE PAVIMENTOS NO TRECHO EXPERIMENTAL DE LEIRIA (1O RELATORIO)

The plan of co-operation between the Laboratorio Nacional de Engenharia Civil and the Junta Autonoma das Estradas comprises the construction of an experimental stretch of road near Leiria which is intended for the comparative study of several types of pavement base courses. The aim of the study is to define specifications for the use of materials which have a grain size range wider than those traditionally used in Portugal, particularly the all-in aggregates. This report describes the construction of this experimental section, its composition, construction stages and controls. Comparative data on currently used methods of compaction control are presented. Reference is made to improvements that had to be introduced in some testing techniques to obtain more accurate measurement results.
