CALCULATION OF FUEL CONSUMPTION BY MEANS OF VIDEO TECHNIQUE
BERAEKNING AV BRAENSLEFOERBRUKNING MED HJAELP AV VIDEOTEKNIK
Video technique was used to study two signalized 4-way intersections. They were geometrically similar except that the speed limits were 50 km/h and 70 km/h respectively. The purpose of this investigation was to find out the fuel consumption for one stop. A stop is defined as a deceleration from a constant speed to stop and immediate acceleration to the same speed again, compared with driving the same distance with constant speed. This investigation deals with 3 different levels of acceleration; low, medium and high. The medium acceleration was calculated from the videotape material. High acceleration was 15% higher and low acceleration was 15% less than medium acceleration. In this work the distance for deceleration was the same as for acceleration. The fuel consumption was calculated from a matrix. The necessary data were speed and acceleration. The most fuel-saving driving behaviour is to accelerate with care. It is also noticable that when the final speed is high the difference in fuel consumption is also high between the varying acceleration levels. (Author/TRRL)
