FLY ASH: THE MANNER OF ITS CONTRIBUTION TO STRENGTH AND THE MAGNITUDE OF ITS EFFECT ON CREEP AND RELATED PROPERTIES OF HIGH QUALITY CONCRETE
It is shown that by adopting a fresh approach a better understanding can be obtained of the mechanisms by which pozzolans in general and fly ashes in particular interact with portland cement. New data are presented which show the influence of fly ash on the creep, drying shrinkage, modulus of elasticity and strength of concrete. Most of these properties were investigated over a range of curing conditions and at ages of up to 6.5 years. It was found that for the 20 to 40 mpa strength range, stress : strength ratios of 0.25 and 0.40, and curing periods from 5 to 28 days, the creep of concrete containing high quality fly ash is consistently lower than that of the corresponding concrete made from plain portland cement. Creep reductions of up to one third were observed. Fly ash has a similar but less pronounced effect on drying shrinkage. The use of fly ash increases the sensitivity of both strength and creep to duration of curing, and reduces the modulus of elasticity of concrete at ages of 7 days to 2 years by about 5 per cent (Author/TRRL)
