THE CHRYSLER DIE CAST AND WELDED ALUMINUM 6-CYLINDER INTAKE MANIFOLD
Volume production of the 225 CID (3.7L) 6-cylinder intake manifold as a die cast and welded assembly has been instituted as a running change for mid-1978 model cars. The development of the die castings and welding of the 380 aluminum is discussed as well as production welding and processing. Each manifold so produced represents a 14 to 15 lb. (6.4 to 6.8 kg) weight reduction and an estimated 30% cost reduction over its cast iron counterpart. Preliminary evidence indicates improvement in gas mileage, engine emissions, and performance. This high volume welding application for die cast aluminum combines the advantages of high productivity die casting and non-vacuum electron beam welding to fabricate assemblies at cost savings over permanent mould and sand castings.
