ANALYTICAL AND SUBJECTIVE RIDE QUALITY COMPARISON OF FRONT AND REAR CAB ISOLATION SYSTEMS ON A COE (CAB OVER ENGINE) TRACTOR
Instrumented and subjective cab ride quality data were obtained for a cab-over-engine (COE) tractor/trailer combination in which two different cab isolation systems were installed. In the rear cab isolation system (RCIS), the rear of the cab is suspended on soft springs and the front pinned to the frame, allowing cab pitch only. In the front cab isolation system (FCIS), the arrangement is reversed (rear pinned, front on springs). The relative performance of the two systems is compared, and results are compared with predictions of a multi degree of freedom tractor/trailer computer model. The FCIS system, while more difficult to install, provides a superior ride, and should be considered by COE tractor manufacturers as an alternative to a four point cab isolation system.
