A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO CAB SUSPENSION
The introduction of the modern tilt cab has required suspension designs to be more sophisticated in order to provide acceptable ride quality. A study was undertaken to determine practical methods and the respective considerations and decisions required to mount a cab to various chassis constructions. Basis of the exercise was a European type truck of cab over configuration. Because measurable standards exist on ride quality, this aspect was studied briefly, although comfort standards vary greatly among countries. The final objective was to determine the cab structural damage incurred through the cab suspension, as well as projected vehicle mileage on various highways before structural damage is caused. The main elements of front and rear cab suspension are discussed, and a system analysis program utilizing both analytical and experimental techniques is briefly described.
