SEALING CONSIDERATIONS FOR TAPERED ROLLER BEARINGS

The application of seals to tapered roller bearings is discussed as a guide for the engineer designing a sealed application, for production personnel installing seals in the application, and for maintenance personnel servicing the application. Noncontacting seals, including labyrinth and hydrodynamic seals, are described as well as contacting seals, such as elastomeric and mechanical face seals and radial lip seals. Factors to consider when investigating failures are indicated, with a list of possible problems, causes, and corrective actions. When problems are encountered that cannot be solved by use of this guide, the bearing or seal manufacturer should be consulted.
