UNIQUE ROADWAY DESIGN REDUCES BUS-LIKE CONFLICTS
A recently reconstructed segment of University Avenue in Madison, (a city where bicycles outnumber automobiles three to two) Wisconsin, is intended to reduce conflicts between bicyclists and frequently stopping buses. The design features include the following: an eastbound contraflow bike lane separated from westbound traffic by a westbound bike lane, a westbound bus and right-turn lane, widened sidewalks, improved terraces, and pedestrian barricades. The unique feature is the westbound bike lane. It allows bicyclists to move through traffic without having to 'leapfrog' stop-and-go buses while staying away from the faster moving vehicles in the regular traffic lanes. All the improvements to this segment of University Avenue are intended to make it safer and more convenient for all users and can be seen as an example of tailoring innovative urban traffic to a unique situation.
