THE REPAIR OF REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES AFFECTED BY ALKALI-AGGREGATE REACTION

The occurrence of damage as a result of alkali-aggregate reaction has been identified in the Western and Eastern Cape and also the Witwatersrand area. Very little is known of how to repair structures that have deteriorated as a result of alkali-aggregate reaction. The paper describes the effects of alkali-aggregate reaction on exposed reinforced concrete structures and some of the techniques that have been developed to effect repairs to structures in the Witwatersrand area. These include improvement of the plumbing and drainage of structures; removal and replacement of defective reinforcement and concrete; and epoxy resin injection. (TRRL)
