ASSESSMENT OF OLDBRIDGES
The paper describes the historical background of bridge loading and assessment in the UK and the recent developments in road traffic that have given rise to the need for a new code of assessment for old bridges. The bridges thac should be assessed are identified, and the two-part format and the limit-state basis of the new code are explained. The author describes the need for the basis of, new HA loading that has been recently developed for both new and old bridges. The state of art for the assessment of masonry arch bridges is described in a historical context and the merits of retaining the simple monogram method of the old code are established. The importance of an early physical inspection of the structures and the application of local engineering experience are highlighted, particularly in the qualitative assessment of the components that are not amenable to numerical analysis. The paper concludes with a hope that the new code will be used to preserve historic structures and to achieve the carrying capacity required of them in the future. The paper was given at the Leamington Spa Workshop held in April, 1983 under the general title "Bridge Construction and Maintenance." (TRRL)
