SINGAPORE BEATS MIXED ROCK

Singapore, determined not to suffer the same traffic congestion as many other developing conurbations, is constructing a 134 km highway network at the same time as the island's 2000m pounds sterling mass transit system. Expressways form che main cross-island links, feeding to outer metro stations serving city central areas. A single design and construct contract has been won by the largest of Singapore's own contractors despite strong international competition. Most of the strata is classified as completely decomposed granite but it contains many boulders, some 10 m wide with soft ground between them. Large pockets of peat and alluvial clays under embankment have been dealt with by a combinacion of surcharging above the pockets and building in 300 mm thick sand drainage blankets directly beneath the fill. This procedure should considerably speed up settlement. Ten of the 13 bridges and viaducts on the route are totally in situ structures with post tensioned deck beams. These vary from 10 span 380 m long crossings over interchanges and ravines to single span bridges. Finished render used on many older bridges, designed to encourage plant growth on their surfaces.
