NEW YEAR'S EVE: HAPPY AND SAFE
The experience of 3 transit agencies in offering free service for New Year's Eve celebrants, aiming to remove drinking drivers from streets and highways, is described. Indianapolis Public Transportation Corp. took the initiative in forming an alliance with the private sector to provide free rides, achieving a high awareness each year by focusing on the number of drivers endangering lives in the community. The promotion of this service, how it is operated, and the ridership are described. Milwaukee has operated such services for almost a decade, now relying on a local brewery to pay operating costs and on others for advertising assistance. New Jersey Transit has also involved private sponsors in its free train and bus service with all such operations handling over 110,000 riders between 6 pm New Year's Eve and 6 am of New Year's Day. All these transit operating agencies remain committed to continuing this easily administered public service program.
