U.S. BUS INDUSTRY: FALLEN ON HARD TIMES
The foreign invasion of the U.S. transit bus market, frequent changes in Federal policies with respect to financial assistance for transit, and shortcomings in transit bus designs have all produced a poor short-term outlook for domestic bus manufacturers. General Motors and Flexible, the two largest U.S. producers, plan to survive the current cyclical market but anticipate that there will be casualties among the recent entrants, the consortia of foreign and U.S. firms. The general prospects for the industry are discussed. Federal efforts to foster a standardized, technologically advanced bus and even the new models of established producers have not always met transit operating agency acceptance.
