PRODUCTION OF ENERGY FROM VEGETABLE WASTE: METHANE FERMENTATION

VALORISATION ENERGETIQUE DES DECHETS VEGETAUX: FERMENTATION METHANIQUE

Green spaces in urban areas and alongside highways are occupying increasingly large areas, and their maintenance mobilizes a non-negligible amount of energy, while the question of what to do with the waste often remains a problem. On the basis of experiments and applications in France and abroad, the Laboratoire de l'Est Parisien has studied the possibilities of methane fermentation of grass cuttings. The study was carried out using a semi-continuous infinitely agitated system in a 30-liter reactor. The influent, which had undergone aerobic pre-fermentation, contained 10% of dry matter. The latter consisted of unsorted grass cuttings from lawns, crushed so as to conform to the scale of the system. Under the conditions of the experiment, the daily production of biogas (60% methane, 40% carbon dioxide in the main) peaked at 2 liters per liter of digester, corresponding to 285 liters of biogas per kilogramme of dry matter.
