ANALYSIS OF DUNTON GREEN RETAINING WALL BASED ON THE RESULTS OF PRESSUREMETER TESTS

The Dunton Green retaining wall constructed of contiguous bored piles forms part of the M26 Sevenoaks interchange. The details of the background, design and construction of the wall are given in an accompanying paper presented to the symposium by Garrett & Varnes. During the design stage there was concern about the long-term stability of the wall because of the uncertainty about the lateral stresses acting on it, and how these would change as construction of the works proceeded, and thereafter in the long term. It was decided to commission a series of self-boring pressuremeter tests at different stages in the construction to observe these changes and, in addition, to monitor the performance of the wall. An analysis of the observed deflections of the wall was carried out by means of a finite element computation allowing fully coupled consolidation which used an elastic, perfectly plastic (Mohr-Coulomb) model of the behaviour of the over-consolidated gault clay; values of the soil parameters and in situ effective stresses were selected from the results of the self-boring pressuremeter tests and triaxial tests. The paper describes briefly the observed pattern of in situ lateral stresses and how they changed with time, and gives details of the analysis. Good agreement between the computed and observed short-term deflected profiles of the wall was obtained using the in situ stresses and shear moduli measured with the pressuremeter. (TRRL)
