TRAFFIC NOISE, PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS AND BLOOD PRESSURE
WEGVERKEERSLAWAAI, PSYCHISCHE PROBLEMATIEK EN BLOEDDRUK
In a cross-sectional epidemiological survey the relationship between road traffic noise and noise annoyance on one hand and psychological problems and blood pressure on the other hand has been studied. Data were gathered from 3690 persons living in all parts of Amsterdam. In most cases, the analysis was restricted to those 1216 men and 1662 women who have lived at their present addresses for at least five years. All participants (71 percent of the invited persons) were 41 to 43 years old. No relationship was found between road traffic noise and psychological problems, nor between road traffic noise and blood pressure, nor between noise annoyance and blood pressure. A relationship was found between noise annoyance and psychological problems, but it remains unclear what causes what. Furthermore the relationship between psychological problems and blood pressure was studied but no association was found. (TRRL)
