CREEP AND SHRINKAGE IN CONCRETE BRIDGES

This bulletin contains three reports as follows; (1) Creep and Shrinkage Properties of New Zealand Concretes, Bryant, AH. This report considers methods of predicting concrete properties, the effect of the environment on creep and shrinkage, the size, shape and age of concrete specimens at loading effects, and the effects of mix design and different aggregates; (2) Creep and Shrinkage in Bowen Street Overpass, Wood, JA. In this report the author gives a description of the bridge investigated and studies the creep and shrinkage effects. Details are given of the instrumentation used in the study, method of bridge construction, recorded strains and modulus of elasticity. The measured values are compared with the predicted values; (3) Structural Effects of Creep and Shrinkage, Fenwick, RC. The author examines concrete properties and methods of assessing creep, shrinkage and heat hydration parameters. The typical structural effects of the above properties in concrete are investigated, eg, deflection of bridge structures, load redistribution in stage built structures, displacement, stress redistribution and cracking. Methods of analysis are outlined , and an analysis of typical problems is presented. (TRRL)
