DYNAMIC FAILURE OF JOINTS IN REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENTS
This note discusses results obtained from a number of tests conducted on various motorways and highways in the UK using an instrumented delamination device (idd) to determine the extent and effect of contained voids, cracks and delaminations in pavements. A brief background on vehicle and pavement dynamics is given and also an explanation of the mechanism of cracking. The reinforcing mesh appeared to be acting as a weak plane along which horizontal cracking propagated with time. A basic conclusion is drawn on the design of joints and suggested remedies to prevent dynamic failure are made. (TRRL)
