POLYMERS STRENGTHEN CONCRETE

Three materials are currently being investigated: (1) polymer-impregnated concrete (pic); (2) polymer concrete (pc); (3) polymer-portland concrete cement (ppcc). A hydrated portland cement is impregnated with a monomer and subsequently polymerised to form pic. Applications include increased flexural strength of fully impregnated beams and partial impregnation of bridges and floors where the freeze-thaw abrasion and skid resistances are improved. A composite material (pc) is formed by polymerising a monomer, which acts as a binder, and an aggregate mixture. Used as an overlay, pc has good adhesion with portland cement concrete, providing an impermeable membrane that can readily repair spalled or deteriorated concrete and restore skid resistance. Either a monomer or a polymer is added to a fresh concrete mixture in a liquid, powdery or dispersed phase to make ppcc. Generally ppcc compositions adhere well to steel reinforcements and are suitable for repairing and overlaying detoriorated bridge decks. (TRRL)
