TRAFFIC CAPACITY OF ROADS IN HYDERBAD

Hourly traffic flow patterns between 7.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. on the six main routes of Central Hyderabad show three pronounced peaks. The morning peak flows are around 7.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m., afternoon peaks are around 12.00 noon to 2.00 p.m. and the evening peak flows are around 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. The maximum peak volume of the three peak volumes in each case is compared with the practical capacity of the route. It has been observed that all the six routes operate over-capacity. The percentage increase of the traffic volume over the practical capacity of the route in case of Station Road is 230%, Tijak Road 106%, Sarfraz Road 156%, Jail Road 10% and Bhurgari Road 6%. Nevertheless, most of the period these routes function over their practical capacity. The traffic congestion thus developed on these routes can be improved by enforcing fundamental traffic management techniques. (Author)
