SEAT BELT AND CHILD RESTRAINT USAGE IN SYDNEY, AUGUST 1983
This report presents the results of the 1983 survey of seat belt and child restraint usage in vehicles under two tonnes tare mass in Sydney. The report presents the survey methodology used, tabulates and discusses the results and presents a brief comparison with the 1982 survey results. Some of the major findings of the survey were that 19 per cent of all occupants did not use available restraints and 5 per cent of all occupants with restraints available used them incorrectly. Thirty seven per cent of children did not use available restraints and 65 per cent of adults in rear seats did not use available seat belts. Restraint use in taxis was very low at 6 per cent for drivers and 14 per cent for passengers. Although seat belt wearing rates for front adult occupants in 1983 showed a slight increase over those in 1982, they are still below the peak wearing rates of 1976. (Author/TRRL)
