PIEZO-ELECTRICAL AXLE LOAD SENSORS
This paper is presented in two parts. The first part descibes some of the findings of the programme of laboratory investigations into the fundamental properties of Vibracoax piezo-electric axle load sensors. After a brief outline of the composition and theory of operation of the sensors, some causes of variations in sensor sensitivity are examined. Sensor mountings are idenetified as a major cause of inconsistencies in signals produced by specific wheel loads, though significant problems have also been associated with non-uniformities along the lengths of unmounted cables. The development of new mounting techniques for piezo-electric axle load sensors is discussed. The second part of the paper describes a practical application of these sensors in providing the vehicle overweight bridge protection system at Coalport Bridge.
