ISLAND-HOPPING ROAD, RAIL LINKS WILL UNIFY JAPAN

The Japanese government-owned Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Authority (HSBA) is spanning the Inland Sea with three island-hopping routes, two of them double-decked for highway and rail traffic. They include 17 bridges and a short tunnel, totaling 13 miles, plus 100 miles of viaducts and roadway on grade. One of the structures will have a record-length suspension span of 5,933 ft. Three of the Others will have main spans rivaling the 10 longest in the world. Among other designs will be stayed-girder and arch spans ranking high in the record books.
