ENERGY GRIDS FOR RETROSPECTIVELY ESTIMATING THE CHANGE IN SPEED OF A VEHICLE INVOLVED IN A ROAD ACCIDENT

ENERGIERASTER ZUR GESCHWINDIGLEITSTRUCKRECHNUNG BEI FAHRZEUGUNFALLEN

Detailed impact data relating to cars in current use is not published. The reason is that such data, which are very dependent on the method of evaluation, and often obtained by very different techniques, can be misleading if incorrectly classified and assessed. Manufacturers thus guard against this risk. But accident reconstruction is often frustrated by the lack of vehicle impact data and methods. This paper describes a method for the construction of an energy/distance diagram as a basis for the development of an energy grid for each car design. The objective is the establishment of an empirical law for specifying the energy absorbtion curve for a particular vehicle in the deformation phase. (TRRL)
