MOMENT DISTRIBUTION IN ORTHOGONAL GRIDS AND INTERCONNECTED GIRDERS

The iterative moment distribution procedure described herein is applicable to building grids and interconnected bridge girders meeting orthogonally in any arbitrary plan layout. The procedure involves the simultaneous distribution of bending and twisting moments in two mutually orthogonal vertical planes together with sway corrections necessary to satisfy the shear equations at the nodal points. In general, the convergence is satisfactory so that values of bending and twisting moments, accurate enough for design purposes, may be determined by executing a few cycles. The procedure may, therefore, be used for a quick hand computation of moments in grids and interconnected girders. The procedure is explained with the help of two illustrative examples.
