THE INFLUENCE OF STRESS RELIEF ON THE VANE STRENGTH OF CLAYS

This technical note describes a laboratory study using the miniature vane to examine the effects of stress relief on the undrained strength of clays. In situ and sample conditions were simulated and the strengths of specimens of the former which did not suffer stress relief were compared with those of the latter which had been subjected to unloading to atmospheric pressure. The effect of the stress relief was found to produce serious loss in strength in the samples. The results, although showing somewhat less severe strength losses, confirm the trends in behaviour observed for a similar soil tested under undrained triaxial compression and published previously.
