CORROSION DETECTION
The Pathfinder, a portable instrument developed by the TRRL, measures electric potential on the concrete surface which corresponds to parts of the reinforcing bars beneath the surface. The operator builds up a grid pattern of corrosion potentials. These are logged electronically, analysed and printed out as a corrosion potential map. It not only shows which parts of the grid are corroded and how badly, but also helps to reveal the cause of corrosion, since the latter can be correlated with surface damage or variation in the composition of the concrete.
