WEATHER PREDICTION SYSTEMS
The paper describes a study of road surface temperatures (thermal mapping) using an infra-red thermometer which was located in a light van and directed at the road surface. Thermal mapping was undertaken in the West Midlands at key sites selected from local knowledge and a number of cold site features were identified which were useful in deciding area salting treatment programmes and priority order. A cost benefit analysis indicated the losses which could be incurred by inaccuracies in weather information. The use of highway sensors, radar TV and computers to monitor, display and store weather information is discussed. The study is part of a larger investigation which seeks to set up new methods of co-operation between meteorological forecasters and county highway engineers so that a more cost-effective and safer system of winter road maintenance may emerge.
