OPPORTUNITIES SLIP THE NET AS DESIGNERS WAIT FOR GUIDANCE

Geotextiles and geomembranes are transforming construction; many possible applications are illustrated. Although manufacturers may have oversold their products, the UK has lagged in producing designs and specifications. Geomembranes are totally impermeable to liquids and most gases. Geotextiles are permeable and allow the transmission of water depending upon pore sizes. Geotextiles were first used as a separation layer, often on a haul road over clay. By careful selection, it is possible to combine separation and reinforcement to permit a shallow construction depth, or steeper embankment side slopes. Often the tests used by manufacturers on a very wide range of products are not devised to simulate civil engineering applications. Little UK research has been published compared with France and West Germany where much has been done to classify products and suitable applications. More research is needed into the economic viability of the product. Mention is made of the use of the trammel drain and geotextiles in underwater repairs. (TRRL)
